On Friday, February 9, 2024, employees from Seaboard headquarters in Merriam, Kansas, had the opportunity to volunteer with Kanbe’s Markets. Kanbe’s Markets, provides access to fresh, healthy foods in the areas of Kansas City designated by the USDA as “food desert”, where residents lack consistent access to healthy and affordable food. In honor of the Kansas City Chiefs making it to the Super Bowl, Kanbe’s organized their RED Friday Super Sorter Event. Over 20 volunteers from Seaboard helped cull through boxes upon boxes of produce sorting through each item to make sure nothing was thrown in the trash.
We were directed to sort the produce into four categories:
1. To be sold at Kanbe’s Healthy Corner Stores
2. To be donated to local food pantries
3. To be used as animal feed and
4. To be composted.
By the end of our two hour shift, the group of volunteers was able to redirect 4,707lbs of produce to keep it out of landfills. We had an amazing experience working with the Kanbe’s team on Red Friday, and to top it off the Chiefs were able to clench the win and take home the trophy on Super Bowl Sunday.
